The Wilbour Papyrus , from the 4th year of Ramses' V ( 20th Dynasty ) reign (1142 BC), is an ancient Egyptian register of lands in Middle Egypt that belonged to various institutions . The papyrus is named after Charles Edwin Wilbour (1833-1896), whose relatives bequeathed his estate to the Brooklyn Museum in New York City .

content

The papyrus consists of two parts A and B. While text A lists over 2,800 parcels of land between today's al-Minya and Madinat al-Fayyum , mainly belonging to temples, text B summarizes the crown land in particular .

Text A consists of over 4500 lines, 102 columns and 279 paragraphs . The paragraphs are divided into four sections, which correspond to four different survey dates. Each of the 96 paragraphs begins with the land-owning institution and lists the land parcels with details of size and location, name and occupation of the person belonging to the parcel , as well as taxation in the form of a share of the harvest.

Each section is divided into five subsections, the first three being assigned to the Theban , Heliopolitical and Memphite temples, the fourth smaller temples and the fifth secular institutions (mostly crown land). This division corresponds to that of Papyrus Harris I ( Ramses IV. ).

The fields of the institutions were divided into different administrative units or domains, which were headed by an administrator, mostly an official or a priest.
