Paradise (Original title: Ma dar Behesht ) is the feature film debut of the Iranian film director Sina Ataeian Dena . The Iranian-German co-production celebrated its world premiere in 2015 in the main competition of the 68th Festival del film Locarno . The drama is a study of society and is about a young woman in today's Tehran who works as a teacher at a girls' school in the suburbs and is becoming increasingly lethargic as a result of the subliminal structural violence that is experienced every day.

action

The 25-year-old Hanieh lives with her married sister's household in Tehran and is a teacher at a girls' school in a poor suburb. Every morning Hanieh wraps herself in her big, black hijab and commutes long and grueling commutes to work. Here the girls are brought up with iron discipline and according to a restrictive interpretation of Islam. Hanieh also has to bow to the strict code of conduct. The young woman tries to be transferred to a school in the city, but her application is stuck somewhere in endless bureaucratic channels. Her school, too, does not give her enough support in her efforts, as it has more serious problems: two schoolgirls who are believed to have been victims of a crime are missing. Increasingly exhausted by her paralyzing everyday life and the double-edged reality with which she is constantly confronted, she makes small attempts to break out of the cycle of invisible violence, but she is not aware of the role she herself plays in this cycle.

production

The film is a Bon Voyage Films and Sina Dena Films production by producers Youssef Panahi , Amir Hamz and Sina Ataeian Dena .

Paradise is the first full-length feature film by Sina Ataeian Dena , who is also responsible for the script and co-produced the film.

The shooting in Iran extended over a period of three years, as the project did not receive any official filming permission and no financial support from the state. This made the conditions extremely difficult and the film team sometimes had to find creative solutions in order to get exactly the images it needed. For example, digital visual effects were used in a number of images. The sound was largely unusable due to the difficult shooting conditions and was reconstructed in post-production in Germany under the supervision of Martin Steyer by the sound designer Lajos Wienkamp and the sound mixer Gregor Bonse.

The film is predominantly cast with well-known Iranian actors down to the smallest roles, but for the leading actress Dorna Dibaj it was the first film role. She volunteered at a girls' school in a suburb of Tehran for a year to prepare for the role. The cameraman Payam Sadegh and the sound recorder Human Maleki also worked in film for the first time for Paradise .

criticism

"... the directorial debutant Sina Ataeian Dena proves that some of the most interesting works of our time are created in his Iranian homeland ... It is an impressively subtle, disillusioned representation of a mendacious system in which the horrific becomes reality through the arbitrariness of the state."

Neue Zürcher Zeitung, August 10, 2015

“In Paradise , director Sina Ataeian Dena follows a young teacher’s search for her place in life with compelling laconism, and cleverly reflects everyday life in Tehran in the story, which was realized without the permission of the Iranian authorities.”

Time online, August 14, 2015

"Time and again he finds surprising, sometimes bizarre images for the emancipation of a woman in a patriarchal society."

Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, August 17, 2015
