Paradonea presleyi is a spider from the family of the tube spider (Eresidae)found in Africa. The first describer dedicated the species to the rock singer Elvis Presley .

features

The males of Paradonea presleyi reach a length of about seven millimeters. The prosoma is hairy dark red-brown and mixed with white setae , which are concentrated in the chest and eye region. The middle eyes are slightly separated on the horizontal axis and there is a significant overlap of the eyes on the vertical axis. The abdomen is provided with two hairy, creamy white, parallel stripes in the form of the letter L and a mirror-image L, bending to the left and right. The yellow-brown legs have spots and longitudinal stripes formed from white setae.

The characteristics of the females are unknown.

Similar species

Paradonea parva lacks the light stripes on the abdomen. Paradonea presleyi differs in the arrangement of the middle group of eyes, which shows large eyes with clear separation on the horizontal axis and significant overlap on the vertical axis, from other tube spider species, apart from Stegodyphus species. Paradonea presleyi differs from theseby the short, slightly blunt clypeus hood , whichis longerin the genus Stegodyphus .

distribution and habitat

The few specimens of Paradonea presleyi found so far were exclusively males and came from Falcon College near Esigodini in Zimbabwe and from the Kruger National Park in South Africa . Further research is required in order to be able to describe the range and habitats of the species more precisely.

Way of life

As well as other representatives of the velvet spider lives Paradonea presleyi on the ground and was using pit traps ( pit trap ) are detected. Detailed information on the way of life of the species is not yet available.

Trivia

The first describer dedicated the species to the rock singer Elvis Presley . On the one hand, they wanted to pay tribute to his services to rock 'n' roll music; on the other hand, his likeness was often depicted in so-called black velvet paintings . This trivial art, widespread in the USA, shows idealized portraits against a velvety black background. The newly described species of spider also shows some dark, velvety hairs. Paradonea presleyi joins a series of spiders that have a (mostly subjectively formed) connection to celebrities, including, among others. a. Otacilia loriot and Aphonopelma johnnycashi .
