The Parc linéaire des rivières Saint-Charles et du Berger is a park in the Canadian city of Québec . It follows the entire course of the Rivière Saint-Charles from its mouth to Lac Saint-Charles , as well as the tributary Rivière du Berger. The linear park was created between 1996 and 2008 through the renaturation of the predominantly built-up river banks.

Emergence

The park opened on September 17, 2008. Its creation is related to the renovation and redesign of the riverbanks, which required a total of 160 million Canadian dollars in investment . The funds come from the federal government, the Province of Québec and the City of Québec. The conservation organization Fondation de la faune du Québec contributed $ 300,000 . The work included the removal of 8 km of concreted river banks, the creation of a 65,000 m² habitat for wild animals, the planting of trees, bushes and shrubbery and the construction of 14 retention basins . Before this renaturation , which began in 1996 , the Rivière Saint-Charles was considered the most polluted river in Canada. It cost an additional $ 9 million to build a 20-mile long walkway.

description

The uppermost, 11 km long section of the Parc Linéaire near Lac Saint-Charles is the most natural. A footbridge enables the observation of fauna and flora. In this area in the La Haute-Saint-Charles arrondissement , the riverside path leads over numerous wooden bridges. The Parc linéaire is also referred to here as Parc Château-d'Eau , named after a water treatment plant built in the Châteausque style ( neo-renaissance ). The next 5 km in the arrondissements of La Haute-Saint-Charles and Les Rivières are in an increasingly urbanized area, with the Parc linéaire intersecting with several other parks. The most important are the Parc de la Falaise and the Parc Chauveau . The course of the river in this area is characterized by rapids and the 28 m high Kabir Kouba waterfall .

We continue through the Parc Les Saules and along the Saint-Charles cemetery. The Parc linéaire also surrounds the mouth of the Rivière du Berger tributary. It intersects with the Parc Victoria, the Parc de le Pointe-aux-Lièvres and the Cartier-Brébeuf national historical site . The Parc linéaire and the riverside path both end at the port of Québec , where the Rivière Saint-Charles flows into the Saint Lawrence River . For the last 4 km, the riverside path is asphalted on both sides of the river so that it can also be used by cyclists and inline skaters . Cross-country skiing has been possible along part of the riverside path since winter 2015/16 .
