Park Yŏng-han (born September 14, 1947 in Pusan , † August 23, 2006 in Koyang , Kyŏnggi-do ) was a South Korean writer .

Life

Park Yŏng-han was born on September 14, 1947 in Pusan, the fifth of eight children. He grew up in poverty and constantly struggled against his despair and an inferiority complex. After not being able to study at Korea University's law school - as intended - he wandered the country for three years, working as a simple laborer and living among prostitutes, pickpockets, vagabonds and other outcasts. He was eventually accepted into Yonsei University , but volunteered for the Vietnam War just two days after enrolling . Upon his return, he wrote the award-winning work The Distant Sông Ba River (머나 먼 쏭바강), based on his experiences from that war. The novel, which deals with various topics such as love, war, freedom, ideology and the importance of individual existence, sold over a hundred thousand copies and catapulted the hitherto unknown author into the ranks of prominence.

Park's works are largely inspired by his own experiences and can be divided into different thematic or stylistic groups. His novels Love in Umukpaemi (우묵 배미 의 사랑) and The Family of Wang Lung (왕룽 일가) are based on Park's experiences during his life on the outskirts of Seoul and represent the daily life of the common people in a realistic way during the modernization of Korea. The novels are written in a warm, descriptive and often funny language style, which is in contrast to the more concise writing style in The Far Away Sông Ba River . Although his themes are as varied as his life experiences, they seem to reflect a certain concern about the corruption of humanity by external forces, such as the ideological war in The Far Sông Ba River or the rural industrialization in love in Umukbaemi .
