Parliamentary elections in Spain 1977
The Spanish parliamentary elections in 1977 for the Cortes Generales took place on June 15, 1977 . It was the first free elections in Spain since 1936.
Historical context
Dictator Francisco Franco died in November 1975. On July 1, 1976, his successor, King Juan Carlos I, successfully urged Prime Minister Carlos Arias Navarro to resign and commissioned Adolfo Suárez to form a transitional government. This marked the beginning of the transition , i.e. the peaceful transition from the Franco dictatorship to a democratic state based on the western model . In the course of a criminal law reform, the formation of parties was legalized again. At the center of the reforms initiated by Suárez, however, was a new constitution that transformed the Cortes, which had previously been a state parliament , into a general, free, equal and secretly elected bicameral parliament. Spain voted for the first time since 1936 ( Spanish Civil War ) in free general elections.
Result
Adolfo Suárez won the elections at the head of a center-right formation that called itself Unión de Centro Democrático (UCD, Union of the Democratic Center) and rallied around him. In July 1977, Suárez was already forming a government made up of experts from his party and non-party members. The Cortes that resulted from this election became a constituent assembly. The constitution of the Kingdom of Spain passed there was adopted by the people in a referendum on December 6, 1978.
