Regional and local elections in Spain 2011
On May 22, 2011, regional and local elections were held in Spain . The regional parliaments were newly elected in 13 of a total of 17 autonomous communities in Spain . These are the regions of Aragon , Asturias , the Balearic Islands , Extremadura , the Canary Islands , Cantabria , Castile-La Mancha , Castile and León , La Rioja , Madrid , Murcia , Navarra and Valencia . In the remaining four Autonomous Communities ( Andalusia , Basque Country , Galicia and Catalonia ) no regional elections will take place in 2011, as their four-year legislative periods have been postponed to those of the 13 other regions.
At the same time, local elections were held throughout Spain (including Andalusia , Galicia , Catalonia and the Basque Country and the two autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla ).
In the context of the elections, the protests in Spain in 2011/2012 formed in over 60 cities . The demonstrators from all social groups demanded, among other things, that over 100 politicians who were accused of corruption should be removed from the electoral lists.
The elections were a significant test of the mood for the regular elections for the Spanish parliament, the Cortes Generales , due to be held in spring 2012 .
Results of the regional elections
On May 22, 2011 elections to the regional parliaments were held in 13 of the 17 autonomous communities. They brought heavy losses to the social democratic PSOE of Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero compared to the last elections in 2007. It is no longer the strongest party in any of these 13 parliaments, while it was in the previous legislature in Aragon, Asturias, Extremadura, Castile-La Mancha and the Canaries. This contrasts with the substantial gains made by the conservative PP . It was able to further expand its previously existing absolute majorities in the regional parliaments of Castile-León, La Rioja, Madrid, Murcia and Valencia. With the exception of Asturias and Navarre, it is the strongest force in all the other parliaments elected in 2011 and was able to achieve new absolute majorities in the Balearic Islands and Castile-La Mancha. The left-wing socialist IU succeeded in re-entering parliaments in Extremadura and Castile-León, in which it was not represented from 2007-2011.
Other noteworthy results are the UPyD's entry into the Asamblea de Madrid for the first time , the good performance of the Basque left-wing nationalist electoral alliance Bildu in Navarra and that the Foro Asturias in Asturias, which was only founded in 2011 as a split from the PP, immediately became the strongest force.

Results of the local elections
In addition, local elections were held on May 22, 2011 in a total of 8,116 Spanish municipalities. Here, too, the PSOE suffered heavy losses, while the PP made substantial profits. The PSOE lost the mayoral offices in the second largest city of Barcelona (for the first time since 1979) and the fourth largest city of Seville (for the first time since 1999). The left-wing socialist IU was able to make gains overall, but lost with Córdoba , where it lost seven of its eleven seats on the city council, the only larger city so far ruled by a mayor from its ranks.
The Basque-left nationalist electoral alliance Bildu , whose participation in the election was initially prohibited by the Supreme Court ( Tribunal Supremo ) and whose lists were only admitted after a constitutional complaint by the constitutional court , scored 25% in the Basque Country and thus became the second strongest force there by votes.
The table below shows the results of the cities with more than 250,000 inhabitants, the capitals of the autonomous communities and provinces, and the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla :
