Scientific name
Parmelia saxatilis

Parmelia saxatilis is a species of leaf lichen . It is characterized by its gray color, large lobes and cylindrical to coral-like isidia .

features

The bearing ( thallus ) is up to eight centimeters in size, has a rosette shape and lies against the substrate. The more or less flat lobes are between 5 and 20 millimeters long and 1 to 4 millimeters wide. The top is ash gray to bluish gray in color. It often turns brownish at the edges. The surface is matt and unripened. In some places it is covered with whitish, raised network veins ( pseudocyphella ), which can extend over the entire surface, especially in young specimens. Later the bark breaks open there and isidia develop. In old age the center is thickly covered by isidia. These are cylindrical to coral-shaped and have the color of the camp or have brown tips. The underside is black, on the edge dark brown. It is covered to the edge with simple to forked, black rhizines .

ecology

Parmelia saxatilis prefers trees with relatively low-mineral, acidic bark ( pH 4.1–4.8); this can also be artificially acidified. The lichen tends to avoid areas with little precipitation. Their tolerance to air pollution is quite high.

Species delimitation

Can be confused with Parmelia sulcata , which also has a reticulate-burr surface. However, it lacks the Isidia, but it shows Soredia . Other similar lichens such as Parmelia tiliacea , P. pastillifera , Punctelia subrudecta and Imshaugia aleurites do not have a reticulate surface.
