Parodia muricata is a species of plant in the genus Parodia in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet muricata is derived from the Latin word muricate and refers to the central spines of the species.

description

Parodia muricata grows individually or sprouts abundantly. The glaucous green, spherical to columnar shoots reach a diameter of up to 20 centimeters. The tip of the shoot is often sunk. The 16 to 20 wavy ribs are blunt. The three to four brownish central spines have a length of up to 1.8 centimeters. The 15 to 20 (rarely from 10) hair-like radial spines are white and up to 0.8 inches long.

The yellow flowers reach lengths of up to 3 centimeters and diameters of 4.5 centimeters. Your pericarpel and the flower tube are covered with wool and bristles. The scars are dark red. The barrel-shaped fruits turn olive green when ripe and have lengths of up to 1 centimeter (rarely up to 3 centimeters).

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Parodia muricata is common in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul .

The first description as Echinocactus muricatus by Ludwig Georg Karl Pfeiffer was published in 1837. Andreas Hofacker placed the species in the genus Parodia in 1998 . Further nomenclature synonyms are Malacocarpus muricatus (Otto ex Pfeiff.) Britton & Rose (1922, incorrect name ICBN -Article 11.4), Notocactus muricatus (Otto ex Pfeiff.) A. Berger (1929) and Peronocactus muricatus (Otto ex Pfeiff.) Doweld (1999, incorrect name ICBN -Article 11.4).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Endangered (EN) ," d. H. listed as endangered.
