Parodia taratensis is a species of Parodia in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet taratensis refers to the occurrence of the species near the Bolivian city of Tarata .

description

Parodia taratensis usually grows individually. The light green spherical shoots reach heights of growth of up to 30 centimeters and a diameter of 8 centimeters. The apex of the shoot is somewhat covered with white wool. The approximately 13 to 18  ribs are arranged in a slightly spiral shape. The four (up to eight?) Cross, needle-like central spines are whitish and have a darker tip. At least the bottom of them is hooked. The central spines have lengths of 1.5 to 2.2 centimeters. The 17 to 20 very thin, needle-like, spread out radial spines are white and 0.3 to 1.5 centimeters long.

The golden yellow flowers reach lengths of up to 3 centimeters and diameters of 1.5 centimeters. Your pericarpel and the flower tube are covered with pink scales, white wool and long brown bristles. The scars are light yellow. The brown, spherical fruits have a diameter of about 0.5 centimeters. The fruits contain dull black seeds about 0.8 millimeters long that are tuberous.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Parodia taratensis is common in the Bolivian departments of Cochabamba and Potosí at altitudes of 2100 to 2400 meters.

The first description by Martín Cárdenas was published in 1964. A nomenclature synonym is Bolivicactus taratensis (Cárdenas) Doweld (2000). The kind were allocated as more synonyms Parodia bilbaoensis Cárdenas , Parodia caineana F.H.Brandt and Parodia krahnii Weskamp

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
