Parodia werneri is a species of the genus Parodia in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet werneri honors the Swiss gardener and expert for Brazilian cacti Werner Uebelmann .

description

Parodia werneri usually grows individually or sometimes sprouts at the base and then forms small groups. The glossy, dark green, flattened spherical shoots reach heights of growth of up to 12 centimeters and a diameter of 17 centimeters. The eleven to 16 broad and round ribs are strongly knuckled like a chin. The large areoles on it are white. Central spines are absent. The approximately six very variable radial spines lie on the shoot surface or are slightly protruding. They are of unequal length, white to whitish gray or yellowish and 1 to 3 centimeters (rarely from 0.5 centimeters) long.

The short funnel-shaped, glossy pink to purple or light yellow flowers reach lengths of 3.5 to 4.5 centimeters and diameters of 4 to 7 centimeters. Your pericarpel and the flower tube are covered with whitish to brownish wool and brown bristles. The scars are dark red. The red, flat-round fruits are initially completely hairy and bristly. When ripe, they are only hairy and bristly at the base. They have a diameter of up to 1.5 centimeters. The fruits contain small, cap-shaped, black seeds .

Distribution and systematics

Parodia werneri is common in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul .

The first description as Notocactus uebelmannianus by Albert Frederik Hendrik Buining was published in 1968. Andreas Hofacker placed the species in the genus Parodia in 1998 . He assigned the new specific epithet werneri , since Friedrich Ritter had already named a species as Parodia uebelmanniana in 1980. A nomenclatory synonym is Ritterocactus uebelmannianus (Buining) Doweld (1999).

The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Parodia werneri subsp. werneri
  • Parodia werneri subsp. pleiocephala (N. Gerloff & Königs) Hofacker
