The Paroo River is a river in eastern Australia and is considered the most important tributary of the Darling River , although its waters usually do not reach it because they seep away beforehand. It is the last unregulated river in the northern part of the Murray-Darling Basin .

course

The river rises in the canyonland of western Queensland between Adavale and Charleville near Mariala National Park , meanders south, spreads out into the wide flood plains of New South Wales and finally reaches the Paroo floodplains in Paroo Darling National Park . Its total length is around 600 kilometers.

Wetlands of the Paroo River

The wetlands of the Paroo River in northwest New South Wales are very important to a number of waterfowl in eastern Australia. These include endangered species such as the monkey duck and the Australian goldencock .

On September 20, 2007, Australia's Minister for the Environment and Water Resources, Malcolm Turnbull , announced that the Australian federal government had included the Paroo River wetlands in the Ramsar Convention , making them the 65th Australian wetland of international importance in the agreement .
