The Parque Estadual da Serra do Papagaio (German State Park Serra do Papagaio ) is a protected area in the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil. The park serves to protect a mountainous region with vegetation of the Mata Atlântica (Atlantic rainforest).

geography

The Parque Estadual da Serra do Papagaio is located in the territory of the municipalities of Aiuruoca (15.76%), Alagoa (5.38%), Baependi (39.93%), Itamonte (34.54%) and Pouso Alto (4, 39%) in Minas Gerais and covers 22,917 ha. The area is characterized by the mountains of the Serra da Mantiqueira and also includes parts of the Garrafão and Papagaio mountain ranges. About half of the area is made up of steep slopes and altitudes above 1800  m . The highest peaks are in the south, including the Morro da Mitra do Bispo (2149 m) and the Pico do Bandeira (2357 m). The rivers are characterized by numerous waterfalls (e.g. Cachoeira dos Garcias ).

nature

In the park there are significant remains of the formerly widespread Mata Atlântica with open pastures, forests and islands of araucaria groves. This is also where the headwaters of the major natural streams of the Rio Grande are located . There is a connection to the northern part of the Itatiaia National Park , which creates a contiguous protected area ( Mosaico Mantiqueira ).

The construction of a hydropower plant in the municipality of Aiuruoca, within the Serra da Mantiqueira environmental protection area and part of the Parque Estadual da Serra do Papagaio, led to protests by the local community and by environmentalists. The hydropower plant is part of a program to build 65 small hydropower plants in Brazil, 33 of them in Minas Gerais. However, the program threatens the state's last remaining coastal rainforests.

history

The seed park was established on August 5, 1998 by Decree 39,793 of Governor Eduardo Azeredo . It is administered by the Instituto Estadual de Florestas . In 2006 it was included in the Mosaico Mantiqueira network of protected areas .
