Baependi , officially Portuguese Município de Baependi , is a small municipality ( town ) in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais . It is 330 km from the capital, Belo Horizonte . The population was estimated as of July 1, 2019 at 19,148 inhabitants , who are called baependianos in Portuguese and live on a community area of around 750.6 km². The population density is around 24 inhabitants per km². It ranks 1963 out of 853 municipalities in the state. The region is known for its numerous waterfalls.
Toponymy
The name is derived from the Rio Baependi , the origin comes from the Tupí languages and means, for example, river with the thing / river uncouth , but the etymology is also controversial.

Surrounding places are Aiuruoca , Alagoa , Itamonte , Pouso Alto , Caxambu , Conceição do Rio Verde , Cruzília and São Tomé das Letras . The municipality has an area share of 39.88% in the Parque Estadual da Serra do Papagaio protected area .

history
First reports about the region come from the beginning of the 17th century. Older spellings are Bahependy and Baependy. The town received its city rights at the time of the province of Minas Gerais in the Brazilian Empire through Provincial Law No. 759 of May 2, 1856.
The non- hereditary honorary title Visconde de Baependi , awarded in 1824 and 1828, has the toponym in its name. The steamship Baependy is named after the place .
