Kingittoq [ kiˈŋitːɔq ] (after the old spelling Kingigtoĸ ; also Qaarsoq ( K'aersoĸ )) is a deserted Greenlandic settlement in the district of Upernavik in the Avannaata Kommunia .

location

Kingittoq is located on the middle of three capes on the south coast of the island of Qaarsorsuatsiaq at the mouth of the Akornat (Sortehul). Upernavik is 14 km north-northwest .

history

Kingittoq was already inhabited at the beginning of the colonial era. In 1798 the living space was probably uninhabited. In Kingittoq a yarn catching attempt was started in 1802, making the place the first Udsted of the district after Kangersuatsiaq . During the war from 1807 to 1814 the Udsted had to be abandoned. In 1850 Kingittoq was again an Udsted, in which 36 people lived at that time. In 1888 the place was degraded to a residential area. During this time he was nicknamed Qaarsoq , but a summer place in the immediate vicinity also carried it.

In 1911 Kingittoq became part of the Upernavik municipality. After it had up to 80 inhabitants in the 19th century, in 1918 only 46 people lived in the area, who lived in seven houses. Only the summer site is marked on younger maps. In 1930, 30 people were counted in Qaarsoq, although it is not known whether this meant the residential area or the summer area. In the 1930s the place was abandoned.
