Aiuruoca , officially Portuguese Município de Aiuruoca , is a small municipality ( town ) in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais . It is 423 km from the capital, Belo Horizonte . The population was estimated on July 1, 2019 at 6003 inhabitants , who are called aiuruocanos in Portuguese and live on a community area of ​​around 650 km². The place ranks 525th out of the state's 853 municipalities.

Surrounding places are Cruzília , Baependi , Alagoa , Bocaina de Minas , Carvalhos , Seritinga , Serranos and Minduri . The municipality has a share of 15.76% of the Parque Estadual da Serra do Papagaio reserve .

The place has a tropical mountain climate, Cwb according to the Köppen and Geiger climate classification . The average temperature is 18.5 ° C. The average rainfall is 1520 mm per year.

history

The region in which the municipality is located today was taken possession of by the bandeirante João Siqueira Afonso from Taubaté in the early 18th century with the discovery of gold on the Rio das Mortes , who founded the village of Aiuruoca around 1706. Gold attracted other explorers to the region and in 1744 Simão da Cunha Gago from São Paulo built a chapel dedicated to the Mother of God. Through the provincial resolution No. 17 of August 14, 1834, the place got its current name and was removed from Vila de Baependi , the installation with self-administration rights took place on September 7, 1835. The municipality was originally larger and divided into districts. Century became independent municipalities. Today the community consists of a multiple district.
