Caxambu , officially Portuguese Município de Caxambu , is a city in the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil . It had 21,705 inhabitants (as of 2010), who are called Caxambuenser, estimated at 21,656 inhabitants on July 1, 2019, and was founded in 1901 as Vila de Caxambu. It is located in the Mantiqueria Mountains at an altitude of 900 meters above sea level. It ranks 163rd out of the state's 853 municipalities. The community area is around 100.5 km². The capital Belo Horizonte is 384 km away.
origin of the name
The name Caxambu comes from the language of the Tupi and means "water with bubbles".

history
On November 16, 1844, the Freguesia de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios de Caxambu was founded in the area of Baependi . From this the independent municipality of Vila de Caxambu with municipal town status was spun off. In 1956 the district of the same name was established.
Medicinal springs
The city is known for its medicinal water springs and mineral baths, from which its nickname city of water is derived. The mineral water is sold throughout Brazil and as far as Florida . The mineral water park of Caxambu ( Parque das Águas de Caxambu ) is one of the largest in the world. Of the twelve mineral water fountains with medicinal properties, eleven supply water containing gas. The cold water geyser Gêiser Floriano de Lemos is also located here .
Together with other cities in the region, it forms the Circuito das Águas (Street of Waters), a touristic circular route.
