The Parrish Art Museum is an art museum in Water Mill , New York , east of New York City on Long Island .

History of the museum

The foundations of what is now the museum were laid in 1897 when Quaker and successful lawyer Samuel Longstreth Parrish had a building built by architect Grosvenor Atterbury for his collections, which consisted of paintings from Renaissance Italy and copies of sculptures from ancient times and the Renaissance. The museum was built on Long Island in Southampton Village east of the city limits of New York. After the museum was expanded in 1902 and 1913, the collection and buildings were bequeathed to the Southampton Village community after Parrish's death.

Through further legacies, important works by American painters such as William Merritt Chase and Fairfield Porter came into the possession of the museum since the 1950s . The new acquisitions, including works by artists from the New York School , made it necessary to rebuild the museum, which was opened to the public in 2012 in the neighboring town of Water Mill.

The new Building

Since an expansion at the old location in Southampton was not possible, the museum acquired the land of a former tree nursery and a winery around 4 km away from the old location and put the new building out to tender. The design by the Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron prevailed among the 65 participants in the competition .

As a result of the financial crisis in 2007 and 2008, the architects' plans for the new building had to be cut. The new building, which has been in use since November 2012, is reminiscent of a large barn. In the west it houses the reception rooms including museum shops and museum cafés, the exhibition rooms in two parallel sections in the middle and the administration in the east. The exhibition rooms, which are illuminated by daylight, comprise around 700 m² of exhibition space for the permanent exhibition and around 420 m² of space for temporary exhibitions.

Collections

The museum contains the largest public collection of works by William Merritt Chase, a large archive on the artist's work and work. The heirs of Fairfield Porter donated 250 works to the collection. Other highlights of the collections include works by Ralph Albert Blakelock , James McNeill Whistler , William Glackens and Arthur B. Davies . The museum plans to acquire additional works by representatives of Abstract Expressionism , such as Alice Aycock .
