Partula clara is an endangered species of snail in the genus Partula . It is endemic to Tahiti in the Society Islands .

description

The elongated egg-shaped, thin-walled snail shell of Partula clara reaches a length of 18 mm and a diameter of 8 mm. The case mouth is 8 mm long and 4 mm wide. The pale yellowish horny or light brown case wall can be slightly translucent and is sometimes provided with oblique axial brown stripes. An opaque white stripe runs along the seam. The somewhat shiny surface is covered with fine growth stripes and very fine, compact, wavy spiral stripes. The housing consists of 4 ¾ moderately convex passages, the last half of the body perimeter being visibly compressed under the outer edge and the base being strongly convex. The case mouth is egg-shaped and somewhat crooked, usually pale brownish or flesh-colored inside. The white edge of the mouth is bent and thickened, except at the top approach and the spindle. The spindle attachment is expanded at the top. The hermaphroditic snail gives birth to living young. It feeds on microscopic plants and detritus.

Danger

In 1974, the rosy wolf snail ( Euglandina rosea ) was introduced to Tahiti to combat imported large agate snails, but it did hardly any harm to the agate snail populations and led to the extinction of most of the Partula species within a few years . On the other hand, Partula clara still has individual populations, including in the Tiapa valley, despite the constant presence of the predatory snail .
