Partula taeniata is an endangered species of snail belonging to the genus Partula . It is endemic to Moorea in the Society Islands .

description

The conical snail shell of Partula taeniata reaches a length of 18 mm and a diameter of 8 mm. The case mouth is 8 mm long and 4 mm wide. The shiny surface is jagged with cross folds and lengthways with narrow wavy stripes. The area around the body is provided with two white, brown-edged stripes. The seam is flat. The housing consists of 5 slightly convex passages, the body passage being about as high as the thread. The spindle has a compressed, curved fold. The edge of the mouth is white, widened and bent over. The hermaphroditic snail gives birth to living young. It feeds on microscopic plants and detritus.

Danger

In 1974, the rosy wolf snail ( Euglandina rosea ) was introduced into French Polynesia to control introduced large agate snails, but it did hardly any harm to the agate snail populations and on Moorea led within a few years to the apparent extinction of all Partula snails, so that Partula taeniata was no longer seen . However, some specimens of Partula taeniata were collected and brought to the zoos of Jersey (Channel Islands) and Saint Louis (USA) as part of the conservation breeding program launched by the Zoological Society of London in 1987 . Here new generations of snails could be brought out in captivity. Between 2002 and 2006, populations of Partula taeniata were rediscovered in the Maatea , Haumi and Moruu valleys that had withstood the predatory snail's long-term presence.
