Paso Yobái is a city and a district in the Guairá department in Paraguay , 200 km southeast of Asunción . He is known for his mate production and since 2007 for the first gold mine in Paraguay. The district has about 30,000 inhabitants and an area of 693 km².

history

The place was founded in 1923 by the Swiss colonist Georges Naville. He had acquired real estate there in order to make the valuable woods of the jungle economically usable. On the Río Gasory, he set up a large sawmill and a cabinet maker. To remove the cut wood and the furniture made on the spot, Naville expanded the old jungle path into a drivable road that leads from Mbocayaty via Independencia to Paso Yobai. The industrial site Paso Yobai, located in the middle of the jungle, was created from the sawmill, carpentry shop and workers' houses. In 1993, Paso Yobai split from the Independencia District and became an independent district.

economy

Paso Yobai is traditionally known for its high quality mate tea production, with varieties such as Labrador, Aromática and Oro Verde . Sugar cane, cotton and soy are also grown.

Gold production

In 1996 the Ecuadorian Antonio Iván Flores Díaz accidentally discovered a lump of gold in a river in Paso Yobai while visiting there. A little later this triggered a huge gold rush in the village. Shortly afterwards, 5000 residents went looking for gold in the river. They later also set up numerous illegal mines. In 2007 the Canadian company Latin American Minerals, Inc. bought the license to mine gold, for which it pays 5% of the annual gold mined to the Paraguayan state. The company drilled countless holes and discovered the area with the highest gold content. During the test drilling, the gold content varied from 0.1 grams / ton to 102.7 grams / ton. The company suspects that the mine could be one of the world's largest gold deposits. In May 2012, the company produced the first gold bar that weighed over six kilograms. In 2014, 50 kilograms of gold were produced. After a technical upgrade in 2016, 102 kilograms were targeted. In May 2017, a further test drilling even discovered a vein with a gold content of 125 grams / ton.
