The Pastor Garafiano is a Spanish herding dog from La Palma , Canary Islands . The name comes from the municipality of Garafía , in the north of the island, where the breed is widespread. In 2003 the breed was officially recognized by the Real Sociedad Canina de España (RSCE), which represents Spain at the FCI , within Group 1, Section 1, standard number 405 . The FCI itself is still pending recognition.

The dog can be found relatively often on La Palma. He guards sheep and goat herds even in difficult to access pastures. It resembles the German Shepherd Dog , up to 64 cm and 35 kg in weight, but visually less massive, has a lighter and longer coat.
