The Patella Island (in Argentina Isla Ruiz ) is a small, yet striking island in the Joinville Islands group off the northeastern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula . It is 3 km northwest of Ambush Bay off the north coast of Joinville Island .
The Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey surveyed the island in 1953. It is descriptively named because of its shape after the common limpet ( Patella vulgata ). The name that is valid in Argentina is named after a participant in an Argentine Antarctic expedition carried out from 1955 to 1956.
