Distribution area

Pateobatis jenkinsii is a species of ray from the family of sting rays(Dasyatidae); in English the species has the common name " Jenkins whipray ".

biology

This ray can reach a diameter of up to 130 cm. It lives in subtropical seawater biotopes down to a depth of around 30 meters. Its habitats range from the southwestern Indian Ocean , starting near Durban , to the coasts of India, Northern Australia and New Guinea .

The animals have conspicuous, hard, hook-shaped thorns on the center line of their bodies, which are brown on top, and small dark brown spots on the rear edge of the body. The muzzle is angular. The tail is slender and slightly longer than the body, it has no fins, but a thorn.

The ovoviviparous species is able to double its population within 4.5 to 14 years, which means a low resistance to population changes, for example through fishing.

The species has no commercial significance.

Systematics

The ray species was described in 1909 by the British zoologist Nelson Annandale under the scientific name Trygon jenkinsii , later assigned to the genus Himantura . The 1984 description of Himantura draco by Leonard Compagno and Phillip C. Heemstra turned out to be the synonym description of the species. When the Dasyatidae were revised in mid-2016 , the species was placed in the newly introduced genus Pateobatis .
