Path was a social network for mobile devices where you could exchange photos and messages.

The company started with an iPhone application and website, and later released versions for Android and Windows Phone . The company competed with other social networks such as Instagram and PicPlz.

history

Path was founded in November 2010 by Napster developer Shawn Fanning and former Facebook co-operator Dave Morin . The project received financial support from prominent actors and programmers such as Ashton Kutcher in the amount of 2.5 million dollars.

In 2011 the project was completely renewed and equipped with new functions. It could grow from around 30,000 to 300,000 users within a month.

In August 2013, Path entered into partnerships with WordPress and many other apps in order to integrate a Like on Path button there.

In 2015, Path was taken over by the South Korean company Daum Kakao .

In September 2018, the company announced its final end on October 18, 2018. Since October 1, 2018, the app is no longer available on iTunes and the Google Play Store, the Windows Phone version was withdrawn earlier.

Functions

The main function is the ability to share, swap, tag and comment on photos. As usual in social networks, messages can also be exchanged. One difference to other networks at the beginning was that the maximum number of friends is limited to 150. The company justifies this with the fact that the contacts should be selected and of high quality. This is to ensure that private information can only be shared with selected contacts. However, this restriction was later lifted.

criticism

In February 2012, the company came under fire for transferring address books of its users to the servers. In a blog post, the company apologized and announced that all data had been deleted.

In February 2013, the Federal Trade Commission fined the company $ 800,000 for storing data on minors. In addition, the operators were obliged to have the data protection guidelines reviewed every two years for the next two decades. In addition, the operators of Path were forbidden to continue to hide the non-user-friendly handling of private data. Once again, the operators declared that all intimate data had been deleted from the servers.
