Willkommlangea reticulata is a Schleimpilzart from the order of physarales and the only species of the genus Willkommlangea . It is widespread worldwide, but is only known in Europe through very isolated finds, the focus of its occurrence is assumed to be in the tropics.

features

The plasmodium is orange to scarlet. The fruiting bodies are mostly plasmodiocarp of worm to reticulate shape, beige, ocher or yellow to red-brown colored and spotted with red. Occasionally the strands are so tightly packed that they form pseudo-ethers , rarely pads made of sporocarps , which have a diameter of 0.3 to 0.5 millimeters and extend over several centimeters. The hypothallus is normal or absent.

The rough, transversely wrinkled peridium is macroscopically light to dark red-brown, yellowish to red-brown in transmitted light and covered with whitish or yellow to red-brown lime, which occasionally forms a continuous crust. It opens irregularly in the longitudinal direction, but the approach remains permanently attached to the substrate.

The scalp consists of a few rounded calcareous nodes, which are connected to one another by translucent to yellowish threads with thorn-like, ungrown growths. The scalp is segmented by white to yellowish, partly perforated limestone plates that have grown together at the edge of the peridium. The 8 to 10, rarely 7 to 11 micrometers measuring spores are black-brown in mass, lilac-brown in transmitted light, and densely blackened on the surface.

distribution

Welcome langea reticulata has been proven worldwide. However, it was only found sporadically in Europe, and only a single find from the 19th century is known from Germany. It is believed that the species has the focus of its occurrence in the tropics.

Systematics and research history

The species was originally first described in 1805 as Physarum reticulatum by Johannes Baptista von Albertini and Ludwig David von Schweinitz . In 1891, Carl Ernst Otto Kuntze created their own Willkommlangea for them.
