Patrizia de Bernardo Stempel (born April 5, 1953 in Milan ) is an Italian Celtologist and Indo-Europeanist .

From 1971 to 1977 she studied Classical Studies at the University of Milan , where she obtained a linguistic work "Sull'espressione del futuro nelle lingue indoeuropee" the Laurea . She continued to study at the Linguistics Institute of the University of Bonn , where she was employed as a research assistant until 1981. During this time, a scholarship enabled her to attend the Summer School of the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies for Celtic Studies in 1978 . From 1980 to 1982 she was a lecturer for Italian at the Romance Department of the University of Düsseldorf and for the same subject from 1981 to 1986 at the University of Duisburg . In 1985 she took up a position as a lecturer at the Romance Department in Bonn until 1989. In 1986 the doctorate for Celtic philology with Karl Horst Schmidt took place in Bonn with the thesis on "The development of the Indo-European liquid and nasal sonantas in the Celtic". From 1989 to 1991 she was a lecturer for Italian in Bonn and in the same year as a research assistant at the Romance Department of the University of Bochum until 1991. From 1991/92 to 1994 she was a lecturer for Latin and Greek in Düsseldorf. In 1992 she received a habilitation grant from the German Research Foundation . From 1994 to 1997 she was visiting professor at the Universidad del País Vasco and from 1995 to 1999 in Milan. From 1995 to 2007 she worked as a research assistant at the Romance Department of the University of Mainz . Her habilitation in comparative Indo-European linguistics took place in 1998 at the University of Bonn with the Venia for comparative Indo-European linguistics with the thesis "Linguistic basics of nominal word formation in older Irish: stem formation and derivation", followed by her appointment as a private lecturer there.

From 2000 to 2010 she taught as Profesora asociada doctora for comparative linguistics (Indo-European studies) at the Universidad del País Vasco , 2010/11 as Profesora agregada , since 2011 she has been Doctor investigador permanente there .

She has been a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences since 2011 .

She is married to the linguist Reinhard Stempel (* 1958).
