Karl Horst Schmidt

Karl Horst Schmidt (born May 31, 1929 in Dessau ; † October 29, 2012 in Bonn ) was a German linguist , Celtologist and Caucasologist .

Life

Karl Horst Schmidt, son of the grammar school teacher Willy Schmidt, and Katharina nee Behendt, graduated from the Goethe grammar school in Dessau in 1948 , then devoted himself to studying linguistics in Berlin , Cologne , Bonn , Dublin and Munich , among others under Gerhard Deeters , Rudolf Hertz , Ferdinand Sommer and Leo Weisgerber , which he 1954 with the promotion of Dr. phil. completed.

1960 habilitation Karl Horst Schmidt as a lecturer for comparative linguistics in Bonn, in 1964 he became an associate professor at the University of Münster , there took place in 1966, he was appointed full professor. In the same year he accepted the chair for general and comparative linguistics at the Ruhr University in Bochum , where he was dean of the department for philology in the 1973/74 academic year . In 1974, Karl Horst Schmidt moved to the chair for comparative linguistics at the University of Bonn, which he held until his retirement in 1994.

Schmidt, who after the death of Prof. Julius Pokorny in 1970 together with Heinrich Wagner took over the publication of the magazine for Celtic philology , which he continued with changing co-editors until 2008, received honorary doctorates from the State University of Tbilisi and the National University of Ireland in Cork . Schmidt's research interests include the Celtic , Indo-European and Caucasian language history and typology .
