Paul Ehrlich Foundation

The Paul Ehrlich Foundation is a legally dependent foundation of the Association of Friends and Supporters of the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Frankfurt am Main e. V. based in Frankfurt am Main . Honorary President of the foundation established in 1929 by Hedwig Ehrlich, the widow of Paul Ehrlich (1854–1915), is Peter Strohschneider , President of the German Research Foundation . It appoints the elected members of the Board of Trustees and the Board of Trustees .

The purpose of the Paul Ehrlich Foundation is to maintain the spiritual tradition and memory of Paul Ehrlich, especially by honoring domestic and foreign scientists who work in the fields of immunology , cancer research , hematology , microbiology and the chemotherapy outstanding achievements have been accomplished.

According to the articles of association, the Board of Trustees of the Paul Ehrlich Foundation is responsible for "adopting all measures suitable for achieving the purpose of the foundation," unless the foundation council is responsible. The Board of Trustees includes 15 nationally and internationally renowned scientists. Its only task is to select the winners of the Paul Ehrlich and Ludwig Darmstaedter Prize, endowed with 120,000 euros . Half of this price is financed by earmarked donations from companies and half by the Federal Ministry of Health . The board of trustees has been chaired by the immunologist Thomas Boehm , director at the Max Planck Institute for Immunobiology and Epigenetics in Freiburg im Breisgau , since the beginning of 2018 .

The chairman of the association is an ex officio member of the board of trustees, as is the dean of the medicine department at Goethe University and the Federal Minister of Health or a representative appointed by him. In this capacity, the President of Frankfurt University is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Paul Ehrlich Foundation, as is the Chairman of the Georg-Speyer-Haus Foundation and the Prime Minister of the State of Hesse as Honorary Chairman.
