Paul-Jean Clays (born November 27, 1819 in Bruges , † February 9, 1900 in Schaarbeek ) was a Belgian marine painter and watercolorist .

Life and origin

Paul-Jean Clays was born to Paul Clays and Anna-Josèphe Khnopff. One of Anna-Josèphe's brothers was Fernand Khnopff's grandfather .

Rocky coast

From 1839 he lived in Brussels . Paul-Jean Clays studied in Paris in the studios of Horace Vernet and Theodore Gudin. In 1844 he went on a study trip to Portugal . He also visited Paris several times and took part in salons there.

Paul-Jean Clays married Marie-Isaure Quetelet on April 22, 1852. The couple had three daughters and a son who died at a young age.

Paul-Jean Clays dealt exclusively with marine painting. He exhibited his works successfully at the Paris World's Fair in 1867 and 1878 . He became a founding member of the Société libre des Beaux-Arts (Free Society of Fine Arts). In 1856, Clays was one of the founding members of the Société Royale Belge des Aquarist. He became an honorary member of the Hollandsche Teekenmaatschappij .
