Paul Albert Zipfel (born September 22, 1935 in St. Louis , Missouri , USA - † July 14, 2019 in Normandy , Missouri) was an American clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Bismarck, North Dakota.

Life

Paul Albert Zipfel studied philosophy and theology at the Kenrick Seminary (1955–1957) and the Catholic University of America (1957–1961) and was ordained a priest on March 18, 1961 for the Archdiocese of Saint Louis . He completed a master's degree in education at Saint Louis University . From 1961 to 1989 he worked in pastoral care in the Archdiocese of Saint Louis.

Pope John Paul II appointed him titular bishop of Walla Walla and auxiliary bishop in St. Louis on May 16, 1989 . He received his episcopal ordination from the Archbishop of St. Louis, John Lawrence May , on June 29 of the same year; Co-consecrators were the auxiliary bishops Edward Joseph O'Donnell and James Terry Steib SVD from St. Louis.

On December 31, 1996 he was appointed Bishop of Bismarck and on February 20, 1997 he was introduced to the office. Pope Benedict XVI accepted on October 19, 2011 Paul Albert Zipfel's resignation due to reasons of age.
