John Francis Kinney

John Francis Kinney (born June 11, 1937 in Oelwein , Iowa , † September 27, 2019 in St. Augusta , Minnesota ) was an American clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Saint Cloud .

Life

John Francis Kinney first studied at DeLaSalle High School in Minneapolis before entering Nazareth Hall Seminary in St. Paul. After his theological training, he was ordained priest for the Archdiocese of Saint Paul on February 2, 1963 by Archbishop Leo Binz. At the Gregoriana in Rome he received his doctorate in canon law. Among other things, he was Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Minneapolis.

Pope Paul VI appointed him on November 9, 1976 auxiliary bishop in Saint Paul and Minneapolis and titular bishop of Caprulae . He received his episcopal ordination from the Archbishop of Saint Paul and Minneapolis, John Robert Roach , on January 25 of the next year; Co-consecrators were Leo Binz , Senior Archbishop of Saint Paul and Minneapolis, and James Richard Ham MM , Auxiliary Bishop in Guatemala .

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Bismarck on June 28, 1982 and he was instituted on August 23 of the same year. He was appointed Bishop of Saint Cloud on May 9, 1995, and was introduced to the office on July 6 of the same year.

On September 20, 2013, Pope Francis accepted his resignation, which he had submitted for reasons of age.
