Paul Audra

Célestin Paul Rosemond Audra (born July 25, 1869 in Valence , † February 2, 1948 in Nice ) was a French painter and art teacher.

He is not to be confused with the painter of the same name Paul Audra (1871-1891), who in turn is credited with a portrait dated 1894.

Paul Audra studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Lyon . He made his portraits debut at the Salon of Lyon in 1897. He then studied at the College of Fine Arts in Paris in the studios of Gustave Moreau , Jules-Élie Delaunay and Pierre Puvis de Chavannes . At this time he met Henri Matisse and Georges Rouault .

Paul Audra succeeded his father as a drawing teacher in the schools of Valencia. He then moved to Nice in 1908 and headed the arts and crafts school there from 1911 to 1934.

Paul Audra was a versatile artist. He created oil paintings, pastels, etchings, frescoes, mosaics, stained glass and ceramics. He dealt with landscape, portrait and genre painting. He helped Matisse with the fresco painting.

Paul Audra exhibited at the Salon de Paris from 1897 and at the Salon d'Automne from 1907 to 1920 . He also took part in the Paris World Exhibition in 1900 .

He wrote the treatise: "The vision and plastic expression" (Paris, 1924). He also published correspondence, particularly in 1913 between Gustave Courbet and the art collector Alfred Bruyas .

Paul Audra was awarded the Ordre des Palmes Académiques and the Knightly Order of the Legion of Honor.
