Paul Baghdadlian (birth name Krikor , Armenian Փօլ Պաղտատլեան , Arabic بول بغدادليان; * July 10, 1953 in Aleppo ; † June 28, 2011 in Glendale , California ) was a Syrian rebetiko singer, songwriter, entertainer and entrepreneur of Armenian descent. He was a singer of the Armenian diaspora and was also known as the "king of love songs".

Life

Baghdadlian was born to Armenian parents in Syria. He had a brother. His family later moved to the Lebanese capital Beirut . In 1965, his mother died when he was 12 years old. His father later remarried and moved to Pasadena . To make a living, Paul Baghdadlian began to sing for others in the streets.

In the early 1970s, Paul Baghdadlian was known as "Paul the Prince". After hearing the music of his compatriot Harout Pamboukjian , Baghdadlian began to sing in Western Armenian , mostly love songs. After achieving great success in this new phase of his career, he moved to Los Angeles in 1977 . In Los Angeles he produced hundreds of recordings, mostly ballads , which he sang mostly in Armenian, as well as in a number of other languages, especially Arabic. He toured the main centers of the Armenian diaspora and Armenia .

Paul Baghdadlian was married twice and had three children. He died in 2011 at Glendale Adventist Medical Center of complications from lung cancer .
