Paul Bernecker

Paul Bernecker (* 1908 ; † June 9, 2003 ) was an Austrian business educator.

Life

From 1952 to 1955, Bernecker was head of the newly established office for the reconstruction of the Austrian tourism industry in the then Federal Ministry for Trade and Reconstruction in Vienna . In 1955 he was the driving force behind the founding of the Austrian Tourism Promotion Association (ÖFVW, today Österreich Werbung ) and was appointed founding managing director of the ÖFVW by the members of the association in the same year. He held this office until 1965, followed by Harald Langer-Hansel , who like Bernecker came from the Ministry of Commerce.

From 1951 on, Bernecker was a lecturer at the University of World Trade, renamed the Vienna University of Economics and Business , until 1965, alongside his work in the Ministry of Commerce and the ÖFVW, and later headed the Institute for Tourism and Leisure Research at this university until 1981; At times he was also the rector of the university. Paul Bernecker made a decisive contribution to the development of modern tourism science. Together with his two Swiss colleagues Hunziker and Krapf, he is considered to be the founder of scientific tourism research in German-speaking countries. (See History of Tourism Research .) 1975–1990 he was a member of the WU Board of Trustees. In 1977 he was made an honorary senator of the University of Vienna . His successor as head of the institute was Josef Mazanec .
