Paul Binswanger
Paul Binswanger (born December 25, 1896 in Frankfurt am Main ; † April 21, 1961 ) was a German literary scholar and essayist .
Life
Binswanger came from a Jewish merchant family. He was awarded a Dr. phil is doing his doctorate . The planned habilitation no longer came about because Binswanger had to emigrate to Italy in 1933 , where he stayed until 1939. Further stations in life were: 1939–1948 New Zealand, 1948–1958 England and 1958–1961 Florence.
In 1931 he married Ottilie Lilienthal , the daughter of Gustav Lilienthal and niece of the aviation pioneer Otto Lilienthal . She accompanied him on all stages of exile.
Walter Benjamin wrote about Binswanger's work, Flaubert's Aesthetic Problems , that it represented “a single wide-ranging misery”.
Binswanger was friends with Karl Wolfskehl and was in correspondence with Erich Auerbach , Ludwig Klages and Dolf Sternberger .
