Paul Boldt
Paul Boldt (* 31 December 1885 in Christfelde , West Prussia ; † 16th March 1921 in Freiburg ) was a German poet of expressionism , whose creative period coincided with the First World War.
Life
The son of a West Prussian landowner studied in Munich, Marburg and Berlin Philology . Fascinated by the city of Berlin, he broke off his studies and published poems in the literary and political magazine " Die Aktion " from 1912, initially with rapidly growing success . From then on he led - more observer than socially - an unsteady life, also moved close to the 'abysses' of Berlin, but reluctantly in artistic circles (to the detriment of his post-fame). In 1914 he published his only volume of poetry - “ Young horses! Young horses! “- which received a lot of attention. From then on he published sparingly.
When the First World War began , he was drafted into the artillery, but was released from the Prussian army in 1916 (without having been deployed at the front) because of “confusion” (but such diagnoses should only be interpreted with caution).
Boldt's last (identified) poem was published in 1918. He started studying medicine. But he died at the age of 35 in 1921 in Freiburg im Breisgau after an inguinal hernia operation of an embolism .
Unlike many of his Expressionist companions, Boldt was already forgotten in the 1920s, and Werner Riegel only rediscovered him in the early 1950s. In 2018 a selection of his poems was published under the title Herbstpark in the poetry classics series: 50 timeless poems by Martin Werhand Verlag .
