Paul Cheikho (born November 19, 1906 in Alqosh , Iraq ; † April 13, 1989 ) was Patriarch of Babylon of the Chaldeans from 1958 to 1989 under the name of Paul II Cheikho .

Life

Paul Cheikho received in the February 16, 1930 Mosul , the ordination . On February 22, 1947, at the age of 40, he was called to be Bishop of Akrê . The episcopal ordination donated to him on May 4, 1947 Archbishop Hormisdas Etienne Djibri of Kirkuk . From June 28, 1957 to December 1, 1958 he held the office of Bishop of Aleppo . He was named Archbishop of Baghdad and Patriarch of Babylon of the Chaldeans on December 13, 1958 . On December 20, 1979, he resigned the office of Archbishop of Baghdad. Since the patriarchy lasts until the end of the life of the elected patriarch, the patriarchy ended with his death on April 13, 1989.

Paul II Cheikho was a priest for a total of 52 years, of which he was active as a bishop for over 41 years, he chaired the Synod of the Chaldean Catholic Church from 1969 to 1989 and was President of the Bishops' Conference of the Catholic Bishops in Iraq from 1976 to 1989 .
