Paul "Pauly" Cohen (born October 3, 1922 in Brooklyn ) is an American jazz trumpeter .

Cohen took lessons from William Vacchiano , principal trumpeter of the New York Philharmonic . At the age of 18 he had his first professional appearances at the Forest Hotel in Manhattan and played from the early 1940s with Bob Chester (with which the first recordings were made) and in the short-lived big band of Earl Hines ; from 1945 with Roy Eldridge , Artie Shaw , Benny Carter , Buddy Rich , Claude Thornhill , Boyd Raeburn and Buddy DeFranco . In the 1950s he worked a. a. at Pupi Campo ,Woody Herman and His Orchestra and 1954/55 with Tommy Dorsey , with whom he also appeared in television shows. After Dorsey's death he belonged to the orchestras of Sy Oliver , Johnny Richards and Machito ; In 1961 he toured Europe with Quincy Jones . In the early 1970s he was a member of the Count Basie Orchestra ; 1976 Clark Terry's Big BAD Band (Live at Buddy's Place) . In 1979 he made a guest appearance with the Basie-Band and Ella Fitzgerald at the Montreux Jazz Festival .

In the 1980s, Cohen was still involved in big band projects by Dick Meldonian and Loren Schoenberg ; In 1985 he appeared with Benny Goodman on the TV show Let's Dance, a Musical Tribute . The last recordings were made in 1988 when he played with Buck Clayton's swing band. In the field of jazz he was involved in 104 recording sessions between 1941 and 1988, apart from the aforementioned also with AK Salim and Herb Pomeroy . A documentary about his life, Taking Charge - The Pauly Cohen Story , premiered at the Arizona International Film Festival in 2013. In later years he lived in Florida , where he performed with his own big band in 2016.
