Paul Delair (born October 24, 1842 in Montereau-Fault-Yonne , Département Seine-et-Marne , † January 19, 1894 in Paris ) was a French poet , playwright and novelist .

biography

Delair first attended the Collége Chaptal and then worked as a cashier in a department store. He had a great passion for poetry. His collection of poems entitled les Nuits et les Réveils , published in 1870 , did not go unnoticed. Hilarion Ballande had launched a writing competition in 1871. Delair won first prize with the piece Eloge d'Alexandre Dumas .

Delair wrote the opening piece for the opening of the Troisième-Théâtre-Français in 1876. Thereupon he was asked by the director of the Comédie-Française to write a piece in verse form, which was also performed in 1880. He was then to write a few more pieces for the Comédie-Française.

In 1883 his play L'Ainé , which was performed in Brussels with Constant Coquelin in a leading role, celebrated a great success. Coquelin was to remain on friendly terms with him later, so in 1885 he wrote the preface for a volume of Delairs poetry.

But he wasn't all successful. His play Rose Laurent was banned by the censors.

In addition to plays, Delair repeatedly published volumes of poetry and some novels. He was also a director of the Académie des Beaux-Arts for many years . After applying to organize the Salon du Champ-de-Mars in 1889 , he was appointed as a commissioner. Shortly afterwards he was appointed administrator of the sculpture collection of the Palais du Trocadéro .

Delair died in Paris in 1894 at the age of 51.
