Almost all of his books are set between the 13th and 15th centuries. Almost all of the murders described in his books actually took place. He gets the information for his novels from medieval files and court records, to which he has easy access as a history professor. In recognition of his previous literary life's work, he received the Herodotus Award from the US American The Historical Mystery Appreciation Society (HMAS) in 2000 .
