Nicolas-Paul Duport (born April 22, 1798 in Paris ; † December 26, 1866 there ) was a French playwright and librettist . He also published under the pseudonyms MPD , Paulin and Erbert .

Paul Duport was the son of the playwright Auguste Duport . In his youth he attended the Lycée Charlemagne in Paris. Duport mainly wrote dramas and provided the libretti for operas and vaudevilles . He was also active as a journalist and wrote, for example, essays on William Shakespeare and worked in encyclopedias such as the biography universelle ancienne et moderne .

He often worked with colleagues such as Félix-Auguste Duvert , Eugène Scribe , Jean-François Bayard and Virginie Ancelot , initially mostly under a pseudonym. The quality of his work was always high, regardless of the attribution. It was only after 1835, after La fille de l'avare , that he mostly confessed to being the author.

His pieces have been given regularly at renowned theaters such as the Théâtre du Gymnase Marie Bell or the Théâtre des Nouveautés .
