Paul Fabricius (also Pavel or Paulus Fabricius ) (* 1529 in Lauban ; † April 20, 1589 in Vienna ) was a humanist, mathematician, astronomer, botanist, geographer and poet in Latin.

He was a student of Johannes Schöner .

In Vienna he became a university professor and imperial personal physician .

As an imperial astronomer, he observed a comet that appeared in March 1556 and went through the constellations Virgo, Bootes , towards the poles towards Cepheus and Cassiopeia , where he last observed it in the second half of April.

On August 22, 1574 he climbed the Ötscher for the first time together with the doctor Johann Aichholz, the botanist Carolus Clusius and the landowner Reichard Streun von Schwarzenau in order to determine geographic locations.

In 1574 his relative Martin Behm came to Vienna on his advice.

He also issued a calendar. After the death of his colleague Bartholomäus Reisacher († 1574/75), whose calendar had always appeared parallel to his, Fabricius became the central figure in the Viennese calendar system. In 1578 he took Reisacher's place in the Vienna Calendar Commission. After the introduction of the Gregorian calendar in 1583, Emperor Rudolf II commissioned him to prepare instructions on how to use it.

In view of the threat from the Turkish army, around 1570 he also designed maps of Austria (lost) and Moravia for Johann Crato von Krafftheim , which were later published in Ortelius ' Atlas.
