Portrait of Paul Foucher

Paul-Henri Foucher , Paul Foucher for short , (born April 21, 1810 in Paris , † January 24, 1875 ), was a French man of letters, playwright and journalist.

biography

Foucher first worked in the War Ministry, which he quickly interrupted to turn to literature. In 1828 he made the acquaintance of Alexandre Soumet , who advised him to read Amy Robsart , a play by his brother-in-law, because his sister Adèle Foucher was married to Victor Hugo . Foucher had to beg Victor Hugo to lend it to him so that he could read it. Victor Hugo himself found the piece so bad that he would have liked to burn it. Fouchet promised to revise it for the stage and in the same year it was premiered at Odéon , when Foucher was announced alongside Victor Hugo. Two years later, in 1830, Foucher was able to perform his first solo work, Yseult Raimbaud , in Odéon. From this point on, his career as a successful playwright was mapped out.

In addition to his work as a playwright, Foucher also wrote for a number of journals, such as L'Indépendance belge or La Presse . He was later a theater critic for La France and L'Opinion nationale .

His death came unexpectedly. Foucher attended the premiere of Ernest Blum's Rose Michel when he felt uncomfortable in the evening. His condition, an inflamed hernia , led to his death within three days.

According to an obituary, Foucher had a very lively imagination, which was reflected in the ease of his work.

Trivia

The Amy Robsart play was received very controversially. In front of the theaters in which it was performed, there were sometimes tumults, so that the performance of the play was finally banned.
