Paul Frankl

Paul Frankl (born January 2, 1878 in Prague , Austria-Hungary ; died April 22, 1962 in Princeton ) was a German art historian .

Life

Paul Frankl first took up a degree in architecture, from 1907 he studied art history in Munich . In 1910 he received his doctorate under Heinrich Wölfflin . From 1914 to 1921 he was employed at the University of Munich. In 1921 he was appointed professor in Halle (Saale) . His academic students include Ludwig Grote and Hans Werner Schmidt . In 1933 he was dismissed and banned from publishing due to his Jewish descent. Charles Crodel , who was also dismissed , continued his lessons in Frankl's private apartment. In 1938 Frankl emigrated to the USA , where he worked at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton from 1940 . He is the brother of the Austrian women's rights activist Olly Schwarz .
