Paul Green , actually: Paul Eliot Green, (born March 17, 1894 in Buies Creek , North Carolina , † May 4, 1981 in Chapel Hill , North Carolina) was an American dramaturge , composer , university lecturer and screenwriter . He won the Pulitzer Prize / Theater in 1927 for his play In Abraham's Bosom .

Life

Paul Green was deeply connected to his home state North Carolina throughout his life and from 1925 wrote numerous pieces about life there. In 1927 he won the Pulitzer Prize / Theater for his play In Abraham's Bosom , which gave a realistic insight into the numerous problems faced by Afro-American fellow citizens and at the same time denounced the racial prejudice that still exists. In 1932 he accepted the offer to go to Hollywood as a screenwriter . His first work was Cabin in the Cotton , a southern melodrama starring Richard Barthelmess and Bette Davis . At the 1934 Academy Awards , Paul Green received a Best Screenplay nomination for his work on the State Fair screenplay . Two of his plays were adapted for the big screen by Fox Film Corporation in 1934 , including Carolina with Janet Gaynor in the lead role. In the later years he was a co-founder of the North Carolina Symphony Orchestra . Occasionally he worked as a composer in collaboration with Kurt Weill, among others . He became increasingly known for his worldwide commitment to human rights.
