Paul H. Kocher

Paul Harold Kocher (born April 23, 1907 in Trinidad , † July 17, 1998 in San Luis Obispo ) was an American English student .

Life

He wrote extensively on the works of JRR Tolkien, as well as Elizabethan English drama, philosophy, religion, and medicine. His numerous publications include studies by Christopher Marlowe and Francis Bacon and by JRR Tolkien. He also authored books on the Franciscan Missions in California in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Born in Trinidad to German parents, Paul Harold Kocher moved to New York City in 1919 and later became a US citizen. He attended Columbia University at a young age and then studied law and literature at Stanford. After receiving his doctorate , he taught in the United States and England and left Stanford University in 1970 . He has received grants from the Huntington Library , the Folger Shakespeare Library, and the Guggenheim Foundation. In 1973 he won the Mythopoeic Society Scholarship Award for Inkling Studies for his book Master of Middle-Earth.
