Paul Köttgen (born March 14, 1881 in Elberfeld , † May 15, 1956 in Gießen ) was a German soil scientist .

Live and act

Paul Köttgen, son of a businessman, studied agriculture in Bonn and Kiel from 1905 to 1908 . In Bonn he became a member of the Corps Agraria. After graduating, he initially worked as an agriculture teacher and then carried out geological-agronomic mapping on behalf of the Prussian Ministry of Agriculture. In 1918 he was trained by Paul Gisevius at the University of Giessen with an agricultural geographic dissertation as Dr. phil is doing his doctorate .

In 1922 Köttgen received the Venia legendi for the subject "Geological Soil Science" in Gießen and a year later a teaching position for forest soil science. The department for Soil Science of the Gießen Forest Institute, which he established in 1928, was incorporated into the "Agricultural Institute Group" of the Philosophical Faculty as an Institute for Soil Science in 1938 when the forestry facilities at the University of Gießen were dissolved. This institute was headed by Köttgen, who had been made a permanent adjunct professor in 1940, until his retirement in 1949.

Köttgen was a scientist with practical experience in the entire field of forestry and agricultural soil science. A method he developed to determine the grain size distribution in soils was used in many research institutes. His main interests were chemical soil analysis and the nutrient dynamics of soils. His study published in 1932 on the determination of the need for fertilization of cultivated soils in the course of the ages is noteworthy in terms of scientific history . From 1950 to 1953 Köttgen was chairman of the commission for soil physics of the German Soil Science Society .
