Paul Kollsman
Paul Kollsman (born February 22, 1900 in Germany , † September 26, 1982 in Los Angeles , California , USA ) was an inventor . He made a special contribution to altitude measurement and instruments in aircraft, which made instrument flight possible.
Life
Kollsman (presumably still Kollsmann at the time) studied mechanical engineering in Stuttgart and Munich . In 1923 he emigrated to the USA. He worked there as a truck driver before he found a job at Pioneer Instruments Co. in Brooklyn , New York . In 1928 he founded his own company, Kollsman Instruments Co., with $ 500 seed capital. After over a year of searching, James Doolittle found himself ready to test Kollsman's barometer in flight. Kollsman developed a combination of gyroscope , artificial horizon and barometer as a navigation device . Kollsman has accumulated over 200 patents during his life. He has worked for civil aviation, the US military, and NASA around the world . The US aircraft in World War II were equipped with his instruments, as were the Apollo missions.
In 1944 he married Julie Dorothea Baronin von Bodenhausen in New York ; she died in 1951. Kollsman died in 1982.
