Paul G. Kwiat

Paul Gregory Kwiat is an American physicist who studies quantum optics , experiments on the fundamentals of quantum mechanics , quantum information theory and quantum cryptography .

Kwiat received his doctorate in 1993 from the University of California, Berkeley , under Raymond Chiao ( Nonclassical effects from spontaneous parametric down conversion ). In Berkeley he was also involved in Chiao's experiments in faster-than- light tunnels. He then spent two years as a post-doctoral student and Lise Meitner scholarship with Anton Zeilinger at the University of Innsbruck . In 1997 he went to the Los Alamos National Laboratory, initially as an Oppenheimer Fellow and from 1998 as a permanent member of the laboratory. Since 2001 he has been Bardeen Professor of Physics at the University of Illinois .

He was involved in fundamental experiments on non-interacting quantum measurement , the quantum eraser and the optical implementation of various quantum protocols in quantum information processing. He was significantly involved in the development of the first source for polarization entangled photons from parametric down conversion (see single photon source ). Research focuses on quantum information processing and quantum cryptography.

He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society (2002) and the Optical Society of America (2005). In 2009 he received the RW Wood Prize , in 1999 the Los Alamos National Laboratory Fellows Prize and in 2004 the Descartes Prize .
